When a major university accepts a donation for environmental research from an oil company, Shirley Schmidt reneges on her own donation and is sued. Alan Shore defends her and is rattled when he meets his opposition, Lorraine Weller -- an old flame. Denny Crane is arrested for soliciting a prostitute and Carl Sack, a senior partner recently transferred to CPandS Boston to run litigation, butts heads with Clarence when he discovers an internet video of Clarice singing in a local competition. Meanwhile, Jerry Espenson assists Katie Lloyd on her first case, a grisly homicide.

While assisting Jerry Espenson and Katie Lloyd with a high profile murder trial, Alan struggles with his love life. Lorraine Weller is hired at Crane Poole & Schmidt, and Alan can't resist her. Neither can Denny. Alan Shore helps Denny Crane defend himself in court when he is sued for firing an associate for being fat, Whitney Rome and Katie Lloyd take on a murder case in which the DA plans to use a functional MRI as evidence to prove that the accused former cop is a racist. Meanwhile, Carl Sack represents Clarence Bell when he sues an online site for posting an unflattering video of him as Clarice; Jerry is overcome with anxiety when he feels it's time to give his very first kiss to former client Leigh - a fellow Asperger's syndrome sufferer and objectophile - whom he's been dating; and Alan mulls over the thought of having a real, adult relationship with Lorraine Weller.

Denny is arrested in the courthouse mens rom for allegedly soliciting an undercover officer in the next stall. Bethany goes up against Shirley in a case of free speech involving a shock jock fired for insulting the elderly.

After trying to sue the National Guard for not coming to the aid of a business that was flooded out during a storm, Alan Shore and Denny Crane decide that it's up to them to stop complaining and do something about it. Meanwhile, Shirley Schmidt's granddaughter asks for her day in court when she's expelled from school for trying to make a social statement; Carl Sack informs Shirley that he feels ineffective at the firm and wants to return to the New York office; and the fate of Lorraine Weller's position at the firm is unknown when she comes clean about her past to Shirley.

Carl Sack and Katie Lloyd defend the firm against a client who claims Denny Crane misled them about the environmental friendliness of the Crane Poole and Schmidt offices. Meanwhile, Alan Shore takes on a bank when the lending institution threatens to foreclose on Clarence Bell's home; Jerry Espenson's objectophile girlfriend dumps him; and Sack makes a decision regarding the future of Lorraine Weller's employment at the firm.

While Denny basks in the spotlight, Shirley Schmidt, Carl Sack and the rest of the firm fear the personal and professional embarrassment from Denny's latest crusade for relevancy. Meanwhile, Jerry Espenson and Katie Lloyd are assigned to the case of a woman who wants to sue her husband's law firm for causing their divorce by advertising that divorce is the answer to all marital problems.

Shirley Schmidt defends Missy Tiggs who, after being dumped by her husband, stole a man's semen and artificially impregnated herself. Shirley finds herself going up against Alan Shore when he's hired to represent the man whose seed was heisted. Meanwhile, Jerry Espenson defends ex-girlfriend Leigh a fellow Asperger's syndrome sufferer and objectophile when she loses her teaching position for hugging a student.

Shirley has enlisted Alan and Denny to help her friend who has a lawsuit against the town for building a nuclear power plant there. But Shirley is shocked to learn that the opposing council is her former college sweetheart, which Carl Sack has discovered. Meanwhile, Katie is warned by Leigh to stay away from her boyfriend.

The sexually adventurous Andrea once again secures the services of Crane Poole and Schmidt and Carl Sack when she sues a company -- that was supposed to turn her mother's ashes into a diamond for misplacing the ashes and giving her a cubic zirconium instead. Meanwhile, Katie Lloyd falls for a client with AIDS who is charged with check forgery; Clarence Bell takes on the case of a woman suing her pastor for causing her to lose her faith after he ends an affair with her; Whitney Rome sets out to sue a high school for causing the death of a woman's daughter who was sleep deprived due to a heavy school workload; and Denny Crane and Alan Shore prepare to take the Coast Guard test.

Alan Shore and Jerry Espenson take on a tabloid talk show when a woman is murdered by her ex-boyfriend after declining his marriage proposal on television; and Shirley Schmidt defends a friend an unstable war hero -- for shooting seals for meals. Meanwhile, Denny Crane goes to extreme measures to win Shirley's affections back when she invites him to dinner; and Lorraine Weller tells Alan that he should seek professional help after he confesses to her that he used to murder his toys as a child.

After her father -- who is in the late stages of a debilitating fight with Alzheimer's -- injures himself and lands in the hospital, Shirley Schmidt wants to end his suffering and asks Alan Shore to argue in court on her behalf. Meanwhile Jerry Espenson's beautiful, new girlfriend sues him for sexual assault, and Carl Sack represents the island of Nantucket whose residents want to build a nuclear bomb in case of attack.

Alan Shore gets the dream of a lifetime for an attorney when he is asked to present an appeal to the Supreme Court in the case of a mentally challenged man who has been sentenced to death for the rape of a young girl. Meanwhile, Katie Lloyd learns some startling news from Lorraine Weller about Jerry Espenson's new girlfriend.

Denny falls for a female cattle rancher who is pushing for the government to stop selling meat which has been cloned. Meanwhile, Shirley demands that Alan sues the Democratic Party after her nephew, a delegate, disagrees with his state's primary vote.

When his ex-girlfriend is arrested for prostitution, Jerry comes to her aid. Carl and Shirley help a woman who is suing the church after being refused her chance at becoming a priest. Also, power brokers woo Denny to run for president.

Alan and Denny celebrate being accepted by the Auxiliary Coast Guard, but their relationship is challenged when each play opposition in a case in which Alan represents a town in Massachusetts which wants to secede from the U.S.
